Sir Melville Macnaghten
In June 1889, Sir Melville Macnaghten joins Scotland Yard as Assistant Chief Constable. With access to all the police reports on the Ripper case Macnaghten begins his own investigation into the murders.
He uncovers several possible suspects and it is his reports which state that Jack the Ripper had 5 victims, the "Canonical five".
Macnaghten enlists the help of new Forensic Science being pioneered by Sir Francis Galton to help with the investigations. Many that were thought to have no proven results at the time such as finger printing and the first rudimentary blood type tests.

 Sir Francis Galton
Francis Galton was an explorer, man of science and a natural philosopher considered by many to be well ahead of his time.
He was a student of many acedemic fields, geography, climatology, psychology, anthropology and many others, with numerous published works.
A cousin of the esteemed Charles Darwin, Galton also theorized on the nature of heredity and genetics and was a pioneer in the field of fingerprinting. |
